Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do we charge for our advice?
A: No – we are always willing to provide an initial contact without charge and if, on rare occasions we feel it is appropriate to charge a fee, we will tell you exactly what that will be before undertaking any major work that otherwise may not generate any payment.

Q: Is there any obligation if you ask for advice or a quotation?
A: No – normally our advice is free and there is no obligation attached to it.

Q:
Can you visit my business if I think it is appropriate?
A:
Slightly harder to answer – if local to the Bristol or South West areas, there is no problem. If one of us is due to visit your area shortly, wherever that may be, there is no problem. If however, we are looking at a small premium where, therefore, our earning potential is small, we may not be able to give a personal visit but we can still offer a very personal service by telephone, fax and email and we will still go into the detail of our information requirement.

Q:
Can we pay the premium by instalments?
A: In almost all circumstances, the answer is yes – however there are a very limited number of occasions when underwriters require the full premium paid up front. These are mainly restricted to building works where major structural alteration or demolition is involved.
FAQ's for Seaway insurance

Q:
Do you remind us at renewal?
A: Yes, our standard practice is to issue renewals in advance of the renewal date and to enclose a standard letter which if signed and returned, allows us to renew your policy automatically unless you instruct us otherwise. Thus, even if you miss the renewal date of your policy you are not uninsured. However we still like your confirmation of renewal each year.

Q:
Am I protected against your failure as a company?
A: Yes, we subscribe to the relevant authorities, we are regulated by the Financial Services Authority and we hold your premiums in a separate statutory ring-fenced account until we pass them on to the insurers.

Q:
If I have a general query can I talk to Seaway about it?
A: Of course you can. We are always willing to help and even if you never do business with us, you or someone that you know may be better able to use our services in the future.

Q:
If your quote is not competitive, can we still use your advice?
A: Yes and perhaps you will let us try again next year.

Q:
 What is Insurance Premium Tax?
A: This is a 5% tax levied by government on all general insurances, with the exception of travel insurance where it rises to the standard VAT rate of 17.5%. IPT is not reclaimable and intermediaries do not receive commission on it.
Q: How do we make a claim?
A: Most insurers now offer a ‘help/claims line’ which you can contact direct. Alternatively we are very willing to help and contacting us means that we can discuss the potential claim and possibly help by explaining exactly what the insurers are likely to require and how they will deal with the situation. Also if immediate action is required, we can often get that moving without delay.
